Iligan is probably the most attractive non beach destination on the Mindanao Philippines

and this is mainly because of two great waterfalls very close to the city, that's the Tigano Waterfall and the Maria Cristina Waterfalls plus the Dodiongan Waterfall.

Iligan and Iligan City are definitely worth to have a close look. The Iligan City waterfalls are very close to Iligan city Philippines. Its a bit difficult to find good Iligan hotels because the hotels along the east west main road are mostly used for "hanky panky business", its amazing to see the people coming in for a quickie, there is nothing to say about it since that's nature. Iligan Philippines has the Tigano Waterfall and Maria Cristina Waterfall, that's definitely worth a trip.

There are several possibilities for a quick Mindanao trip into the area. The quickest is, take a airplane from Manila or Cebu to Cagayan de Oro and a bus, taxi or rent car will do the rest, it’s about 90km, but be aware the road is very bad and traffic is awful during daytime. Another possibility is taking a ship or ferry from Manila or Cebu to Iligan, from Davao its first to Butuan

and to Iligan via Cagayan de Oro.

Be aware that all know time and distance relations wont apply on Mindanao because about 80% of the roads are in real bad condition, no wonder that some people on the island getting restless since it is obvious that Mindanao is totally neglected by the central government in Manila. This is unfortunate considering the tourist potential of the island if someone wont believe this they should look to Thailand and Malaysia, they care about the infrastructure.

Iligan City is located at the northeast cost of Mindanao at the Iligan Bay about 800km south of Manila. The area is about 65% hills, 30% nearly level to moderately sloping and 4% is flat.

The main festival is the Diyandi Festival Sa Iligan,

a month long festival starting at the end of September. The main event of the Diyandi Festival is a ritual performance by an all-female group outside the Cathedral before the start of the Komedya or Comedia de San Miguel, a folk stage play depicting the celestial battle. It depicts the courtship between a Maranao male and Higaonon female culminating into an offering symbolic of their union and bountiful harvest to the Archangel St. Michael. The ritual aptly describes the peaceful coexistence of Iligan’s people, Maranaos, Higaonons and Christians.

Iligan watertfalls are the most attractive

for outdoor adventure, its the whole coast from the south all the way up to Cagayan de Oro. There are 3 major problems in terms of tourism, the first are the roads, the second, there is no real Mindanao beach, only stone beach and the third is, a trip to the famous Lanao Lake is not possible since the area around the lake is a -no go- zone due to the well known problem with the militant Islamists.

Iligan City is not only a waterfall 'hot spot', actually there are dozens of them, the city also has an excellent deep sea port where some manufacturing is around, the port has the highest counts of private piers in the Philippines.
